Santiago de Alfama is the hotel for people who want to open the shutters onto the oldest part of Lisbon rather than look at it from a viewpoint. A 15th-century palace on Rua de Santiago, a few steps from the Miradouro de Santa Luzia and the castle walls, restored in 2015 into 19 rooms with Audrey's restaurant and a small cafe on the street. The building does most of the talking: thick walls, tiles, stone stairs and rooms that look over rooftops to the river.
The recurring theme in feedback is atmosphere first, staff second, and both score well. The trade-off is the neighbourhood itself. Cars cannot reach the door, the streets are steep and cobbled, tram 28 clatters past nearby, and the area fills with tour groups by late morning and empties by night.
Book it for a romantic couple of nights, a first visit where the medieval city is the point, or the pleasure of walking back through empty alleys after dinner. If you want to be near Chiado's restaurants and nightlife, Palácio Ludovice gives you history without the hike.
