Casa da Companhia

The Porto hotel that balances address, pools, spa and price better than most, without being the best at any one of them.

From about €165 a night

The all-rounder: a 16th-century port-company house on pedestrian Rua das Flores with a heated indoor pool, a rooftop pool and a spa, at a rate that stays sensible for most of the year.

The take

Casa da Companhia is the 16th-century house at Rua das Flores 69 that the port company now called Real Companhia Velha rented in the 18th century. IHG's Vignette Collection opened it as a 40-room hotel in March 2023, keeping the stone, the vaulted ceilings and a central courtyard. Rua das Flores is pedestrianised, so you step out into the prettiest street of the Baixa with São Bento station five minutes away.

What makes it the balanced choice is how many things it does properly at once. There is a heated indoor pool, a small unheated rooftop pool with the cathedral in view, a spa by L'Occitane with sauna and Turkish bath, a gym, two places to eat and a bar on the street. Guest feedback returns to the same points: the breakfast, the warmth of the staff and the calm of the pools on a hot afternoon.

The compromise is that none of it is exceptional on its own. The rooftop pool is a plunge rather than a swim, the entry rooms in a 16th-century shell vary in shape, and a full house stretches the team. For a first Porto trip that wants everything within reach, that trade reads well.

The room to book: King Suite Sé Cathedral View Balcony

40 to 44 m² against 26 to 42 for a King Premium, with a balcony facing the Sé cathedral and room to sit. In a 16th-century shell the entry rooms vary in shape, and this is the category where the outlook and the space are both guaranteed by the name. The King Premium Sé Cathedral View Balcony, at 30 to 31 m², buys the same view for less.

Ask for
A balcony room facing the cathedral rather than the courtyard. The hotel publishes no floor plans and no floor tip is supported by a source.
Avoid
King or Twin Premium rooms on the Rua das Flores side if you sleep lightly, and the smallest King Premium sizes if you want space.
