The take

Torel Avantgarde opened in September 2017 on Rua da Restauração, on the steep hillside west of the centre between the Palácio de Cristal gardens and the Clérigos tower. Interiors are by Isabel Sá Nogueira and Nano Design, and each of the 38 rooms, 21 suites and the Maisonette takes a name and a mood from an avant-garde figure: Picasso, Frida Kahlo, Coco Chanel, Hitchcock, Zaha Hadid. It is themed, but done with enough restraint and Portuguese craft that it holds up.

The river does the rest. Rooms from the Executive Deluxe tier upwards have balconies over the Douro and Gaia, the Camellia Garden has an outdoor pool with the same view, and the Calla spa adds a heated pool, sauna and gym. Tenro by Digby, the restaurant, runs along one wing behind floor-to-ceiling glass with the pool terrace and the river beyond. Guests keep mentioning the staff, the art and the breakfast view.

The catch is geography. The hotel sits on a hill about a kilometre from Aliados, so every walk back ends with a climb, and the entry Classic rooms are 18 to 22 m² with no stated view. Book the balcony or you have booked the wrong hotel.

The room to book: Executive Deluxe Room

27 to 31 m² with a balcony over the Douro, and the first tier where the hotel guarantees the river; Classic and Executive rooms, 18 to 30 m², state no view. The Executive Royal Room, 27 to 39 m², adds the circular bath by the window for about EUR 60 more on the hotel's from-rates.

Ask for
Nothing beyond the category: a river-facing balcony is built into its name. The hotel publishes no floor plans and no floor tip is supported by a source.
Avoid
Classic Rooms, 18 to 22 m² with a shower only and no stated view, and the plain Executive Room if you are coming for the river.

Chef João FigueirinhasContemporary Portuguese with an aged-beef sideline, behind glass over the pool terrace and the Douro

The restaurant runs along one wing of the hotel behind floor-to-ceiling glass, with the pool terrace in front and the Douro and Gaia beyond it, which is the reason to book a table whether or not you are sleeping upstairs. João Figueirinhas, who cooked at The Yeatman and Euskalduna Studio, treats old Portuguese dishes with a lighter hand and runs an aged-beef line with El Capricho on the side. There is no Michelin recognition in the 2026 guide; the terrace at dusk is the argument, and the weekday executive lunch at EUR 35 is the sensible way in.

Questions people ask

Good questions

Is Torel Avantgarde worth it?

If the room is the point of the trip, this is the Porto hotel that treats it that way. Pay for the balcony and accept the hill. Design is the highest bar on this chart and the reason to book; the location score reflects a hillside a kilometre from the centre rather than anywhere remote. Everything else sits in the middle, which for a 60-room city hotel with a pool is the right place.

Does Torel Avantgarde have a pool or a beach?
