1872 River House
The cheapest way to wake up to the Douro in Porto, provided you book the right side of the house.
€From about €130 a night
Eight rooms in an 1872 townhouse on the Ribeira waterfront, half of them with the Douro outside the window, for a fraction of what the grand hotels charge for the same view.
Ribeira, PortugalThe take
1872 River House is a guesthouse, not a hotel, and that is the point. It occupies a restored townhouse on Rua do Infante D. Henrique, the riverfront road at the eastern end of Ribeira, with the quays a few steps away and the Dom Luís I bridge in view from the river rooms. Eight rooms, a breakfast room facing the water, an owner-run team that guests keep singling out for going beyond what a small place needs to do, and January rates well under half of what the same outlook costs across the river.
The rooms carry the 2014 rebuild well: stone and brick walls, marble bathrooms with rainfall showers, individual layouts rather than a template. They are compact, with little storage, and half of them face the street rather than the river. Breakfast is the other reason people come back, with cheeses, cured meats, homemade pastries and eggs cooked to order.
Treat it as a base for a first or second Porto trip where the money goes on the city instead of the hotel. The trade is Ribeira itself: lively into the evening, loud on summer weekends and festival nights, and no car, spa or restaurant to retreat to.
A few images that matter

The room to book: Superior Room with River View
The house sells two categories and the difference is the window: Superior rooms look at the Douro and the Dom Luís I bridge, Charm rooms look at Rua do Infante D. Henrique. At this price the river is the whole reason to stay, so pay the difference.
- Ask for
- The hotel does not publish room numbers or floors. Guests report that even-numbered rooms face the river and that a few river rooms have small balconies, so ask for a balcony when you book and confirm the view in writing.
- Avoid
- Charm Room with City View unless the rate is the only thing that matters; you keep the address and the breakfast but lose the view.
