The take

Quinta Nova is the hotel on this list where you stay put. The estate has made wine since 1756, and the Amorim family opened the Winery House in 2005 as the first hotel in the Douro built around wine tourism. It is only 11 rooms, six in the 18th-century manor house and five in the terrace building beside it, all looking down the terraced slope to a bend of the river between Régua and Pinhão. There is a small unheated pool by the vines, a chapel from 1795, a wine museum, 8 km of marked walks across the 120 hectares and a winery you reach on foot.

The setting is what guests talk about most, then the staff, who get consistent credit for warmth in a place this small, then breakfast. Dinner at Terraçu's splits opinion: a highlight for some, uneven for the price for others, and with the nearest alternative a drive on single-track roads in the dark, you are committed to it.

Allow 1h40 from Porto airport by car, with the last stretch narrow and winding, or take the Linha do Douro to Ferrão and let the estate collect you, which the hotel recommends.
